Decorate Your Front Door for Autumn

With fall comes some of the year’s best decorations. From browns and reds to vibrant oranges and yellows, the colors of the fall season can really spruce up the exterior of your home. The top spot for showing your fall spirit is your front door, where you can welcome family, friends, and guests with anything from wreaths to displays. Here are some suggestions for festive fall door decorations you can try out this year.

Scarecrows and Sacks

Got an old wide-brimmed floppy straw hat sitting around? Convert it into a cute scarecrow with a friendly face using some raffia for hair, googly eyes, silk autumn leaves, some pussy willows with berries, and ribbon. A burlap bag also evokes feelings of autumn’s blessings, lending a certain rustic charm to any front door. Stuff with flowers and pumpkins, and stencil “Welcome” across the front. A simple sheaf of wheat tied with a cranberry colored bow also gets some understated attention.

Baskets

If you love apple picking, try an apple basket theme for your entry way. Hang a wooden basket on your door filled with shiny red and green apples, with a wooden “Apples” sign above. Or perhaps a simple flower basket is more your speed. Pick up a flat wicker or woven basket and fill with seasonal flowers, leaves, cinnamon sticks and pine cones.

Wreaths

In lieu of a traditional wreath, try a rake head wreath instead. Re-purpose the top of an old rake and stuff the tines with faux leaves wrapped with a burlap sack bow.

Tulips aren’t just for spring. Arrange tulips in autumnal tones for a vibrant effect, says Elle Decor. Other great materials for crafting wreaths? Pussy willows, eucalyptus leaves, pumpkins and sunflowers, feathers and foliage, magnolia buds, colorful herbs, dark wheat, faux pomegranate, safflower, and mums.

Your Yard and Porch

How you decorate your front porch and yard can complement what you put on your entry door. First, create a focal point. Perhaps this is your front porch, or maybe a walkway or garden out front. Decorate your porch with an old wagon, wheelbarrow or bushel basket, stocking it with different colored mums, Indian corn, pumpkins and gourds, says DIY Network. Use hay bales to stagger the height of your display and add gauzy bows to the tops of your pumpkins. You can even go monotone and stick with all-white pumpkins surrounded by pine cones, cinnamon sticks and acorns for contrast.

Or, try a pumpkin planter on the front porch. Hollow out a large pumpkin and stuff it with a pot of mums. Display a terrarium made up of a bell jar and a shallow terra-cotta bulb dish highlighting natural elements like miniature pumpkins, pinecones, leaves and Spanish moss. String some outdoor lights along your porch to complete the look for a nighttime delight. For relaxing with some apple cider, incorporate dark wicker furniture with rusty orange padding, featuring wicker baskets filled with cinnamon sticks, pinecones and acorns nearby.
