7 Ways to Decorate With Barn Doors

Thursday, February 27th, 2020

Barn doors may be characteristically country, but they have certainly become a trendy design option for homes of all styles today. From farm houses to modern homes, barn doors are dripping with vintage charm as they offer a clever way to add style and separation to bedrooms, common rooms, bathrooms, closets and more. They’re also very versatile, offering just enough rustic appeal to blend old with new. Take some inspiration from these seven ideas on decorating with barn doors.

1.    Conceal a Bathroom

If you have a half bath, a barn door is perfect here, as it takes up considerably less space than a traditional door that swings in and out.

2.    In the Kitchen

You can use a chalkboard barn door as the perfect way to conceal a pantry in your kitchen. Plus, you get an added bonus space for notes, reminders and to-do lists. The all-black look is all the rage now in kitchen décor, a timeless and classic look that offers an “upscale farm-to-table restaurant” feel, especially when paired with an exposed brick kitchen, like you see here on The Spruce. This type of chalkboard barn door also works well in a kids’ bedroom or playroom.

3.    Go Mini

Who says a barn door has to be full-sized? Mini-barn doors are perfect for kitchens or laundry rooms when you are looking to conceal dishwashers, trash cans or washer-dryer units.

4.    Gilded Age

Rose gold and metal barn doors are a classy idea for any space, particularly for a modern or contemporary home. Use dual-doors to conceal a master bath, or as a closet door in your bedroom.

5.    Hide Unsightly Stuff

Not everything is meant to be displayed. Sliding barn doors give you the opportunity to add storage space to narrow entryways or hallways. Perhaps you have a cluttered closet, or you need a large storage space for bikes and sporting equipment. Barn doors conceal these well.

6.    Textures and Patterns

Chevron in particularly is hot right now. Incorporate a striped barn door to update any room, adding texture through the attachment of wooden boards or by painting the design onto plywood.

7.    Mirrored Barn door

Why not swap out a traditional bathroom or closet door with one that gives you mirror space all in one? Not only does the room look bigger, it saves on space that would otherwise be taken up by a hanging mirror.
