Charm Buyers With These Front Door Curb Appeal Ideas

Front door curb appeal: not everybody has it, but everybody should. This is your big chance to  give off a great first impression. If you’re selling your home, even better: nothing attracts buyers more than stunning curb appeal. As your guests ring the doorbell or potential buyers wait while their agent fiddles with the lock box, they’re making snap judgements about what they see.

Sticky cobwebs, rusted hardware, and peeling paint don’t say “welcome.” Rather, a spotless front step, fresh coat of paint and vibrant flower display does. So how can you dress up your front porch? Start with the entry door.

1.  Clean it Up

The first step is to clean up the front door and immediate area, making sure everything is free from grime, dirt, debris and cobwebs. Sweep away leaves from the stoop and wash down the siding surrounding the door with a soft bristle brush. For vinyl siding, use a vinegar and water solution; for brick, use a bleach and water mix.

Then, remove the screens from your storm door frames and use a portable shop vacuum to remove debris. Wipe them down with a rag and all-purpose cleaner, then rinse with a garden hose on low pressure. Use a mixture of water and soap to wipe down your front door, and wash windows with a spray mixture and microfiber cloth for no streaks.

2.  Slap on a New Coat of Paint

Nothing makes over a door like a fresh coat of paint. A brightly colored front door will grab attention, so go with something bold like red, blue or even black for a classic home.

Be sure to consider the emotions you want to convey with your color choice. If you want to convey peace and health, go with green. If you want to evoke clarity and optimism, go with yellow or orange. If you want exciting and bold, go with red. Remember, paint is the cheapest way to enhance your home.

3.  Add a New Mailbox

If you have a mailbox on your porch rather than out by the street, make sure it’s in good working order, both functionally and cosmetically. The mailbox is a very simple way to update the whole look of your front entry. Just make sure it complements the style of your home and hardware finishes on the rest of the porch.

4.  Add Attractive House Numbers

You probably don’t give much thought to your house numbers, but this is another simple way to add a decorative element to your front entry. Make sure they’re big and bold enough to be seen from the street. Not only will this allow your guests and potential buyers to find your home with little frustration, it will aid first responders in locating your residence in an emergency with little time wasted.

Keep in mind, your house numbers are seen as an extension of your home’s architectural style.

5.  Purchase a New Custom Door

Of course, if your door is very old, outdated and in need of repair, the best option is to just install a new one.
